Real ID Information

Joint Base (JB) Charleston is open for outdoor recreation to all individuals possessing proper ID. Proper ID is a DoD ID for Active Duty Military, Reserve, National Guard, DoD Civilians, Retired Military, Retired DoD Civilians and their dependents.

Access Eligibility/IDs - DoD and Non-DoD

DoD Personnel : Category B

DoD personnel are not required to complete an annual background check. They must purchase appropriate JB Charleston Permits and carry their DoD ID when participating in outdoor recreational activities on base.  DoD personnel are required to register all hunting firearms brought onto JB Charleston and carry their completed firearms registration form with them when possessing firearms on base.  This is a one-time registration.  Download the form and submit to the Visitor Control Center (VCC) either by e-mail or in person. Your completed firearms registration form will be returned by mail within two weeks. To check the status of your registration contact the VCC at 843/794-7417. More information click here

Non-DoD Personnel: Category A

All non-DoD personnel seeking access to JB Charleston must complete an annual background check through the Visitor Control Center (VCC). In addition, all hunters are required to register all firearms brought onto JB Charleston and carry their completed firearms registration form with them when possessing firearms on base.  Firearms registration is a one-time registration for a particular firearm. More information click here

Print the Background check (Worksheet for Base Access)  and weapons registration  (if necessary) forms, fill them out, sign them, and submit, along with a photo copy of a Real ID, driver's license or U.S. passport, to the Security Forces Visitor Control Center, via email (628SFS@us.af.mil), fax (850)283-2202, or mail to 628 SFS  Attn:  Outdoor Recreation, 2316 Red Bank Road, Bldg 1978, Goose Creek, SC, 29445-8601 or hand deliver to the VCC, 4232 Red Bank Road during business hours. Hand delivery is the most reliable form of submission.

Once received, a backgound check may take up to 72-hours to process or longer if discrepancies are found.   If you submit your background check and weapons registration forms via e-mail you must still go by the VCC with your Real ID identification to pick up your DBIS badge. VCC hours are Monday thru Friday, 0700 to 1600.  Saturday and Sunday,  the VCC is closed. Call the VCC at (843) 794-7417 to check on the status of your background check if your account has not been activated in two weeks. Once your background check is complete your JB Charleston iSportsman account will be activatied and you may purchase permits. Background checks and permits expire one year from date of issue.

Before attempting to purchase any JB Charleston permits determine what state and/or federal licenses and permits you need for your activity and make those purchases.  Then, log into your JBC iSportsman account and acquire desired base permits: hunting or fishing, or hunt/fish combo or recreation (trails). All sales are final - No refunds.

Now, with your JBC permit(s) and Real ID, go to the VCC and pick up your DBIS badge.  Always carry your permit(s), along with any applicable state permits and DoD ID or DBIS badge when participating in hunting, fishing and/or general recreation on Joint Base Charleston.

Please be aware the DBIS badge does NOT permit you to bring family members or friends onto the installation.  All non-DoD adults must have individual DBIS badges.  Additionally, any individual operating a vehicle on the installation must insure that it meets the minimum insurance requirements, have a valid Driver’s License and Vehicle Registration in the vehicle. The issuance of a badge/pass is a privilege that can be withdrawn and the individual can be barred from base for non-compliance with JB Charleston policies and or USAF Directives.
